liptikl was born of need. Tim (a guitarist, artist and amateur songwriter) was always saying to Pete how difficult he found it to write lyrics for his songs. Like many songwriters, he found creating melodies or arrangements easier than writing lyrics. He could have gone out to try to find a lyricist to work with, but he could just never get around to it. The mainly thesaurus or rhyming style software tools he had come across just did not work for him, either. He needed more fundamental help: tools for generating lyric ideas!
the birth of liptikl
No doubt bored by Tim's poor lyric-writing efforts and his incessant wittering on about how it must be possible to do something in software, Pete one day said: ※Tim, you do realise that we could create a generative tool to help you do that?§. That was the defining moment. We talked about what we would want it to do, did some quick searches and found nothing out there quite like what we were thinking. Necessity being the mother of invention, we got to work on it. After a furious round of prototyping and experimentation, we felt we were on to something!
how it got its name
Having started to build the product, we really needed to name it! We knew the kind of qualities we wanted it to have and came up with ※elliptical§ - it just popped into our heads. We were tickled by this as it had a bit of word play in it ※lip tickle§, and could be married with some neat imagery. We liked its quirkiness, too, and kept thinking that ※tickling lips§ was a way of stimulating words and utterances, and teasing new prose into existence! So, there you have it, we decided on the product name ※liptikl§ for a lyric generator that delivers unusual, obscure, non-obvious, ambiguous and unexpected (and hopefully good!) results. |
